Human events reports that credible insiders say that John Paul Stevens is ill and may retire soon. He is pushing 90 so this is not surprising. With this bit of news it is imperative that Michael Steele, Conrad Burns, Jim Talent, and Tom Kean win. We have to hold a filibuster proof majority in the Senate. The Supreme Court may hang in the balance.
Let me remind you of a bit of history. In 1986, Republicans lost the Senate because of the 6 year itch. Soon afterwards, Robert Bork, a brilliant, distiguished, and accomplished judge, was shamefully slandered, lied about, and defeated by a Democratic majority and a few Republican traitors (eg Arlen Specter). Moderate Anthony Kennedy was nominated in his place. We cannot let this happen again. Update: Well this obviously didn't end up developing. I don't have any more news on Steven's retirement, but the guy is extremely old. I would not be surprised in the least if he decides that he wants his successor to be confirmed by an evenly divided Senate. If he does retire before 2008, look for his replacement battle to be WWIII.
